Why teaching? I started teaching when I was 7. I used to sit my younger brother and sister down, pull out a blackboard and chalk and teach them everything I knew about reading and writing, which wasn’t much at the time. The passion for helping others reach their potential and the interest in working with others to research and discuss the ways of the world has been there for me from a very young age. My first career was in print journalism. I then taught English and Portuguese to adults. I found my niche in working with children. They are fun, curious, honest, open to new ideas and experiences, and engaging. I learn as much from them as they learn from me.

What makes Walgrove a special place? I have been with the district since 2001 and have worked at five different schools as a classroom teacher, literacy coach, and instructional coach. Walgrove is a very special place for the diversity of its population, its progressive culture, sense of community, and skilled staff of educators. We don’t always agree on things, but we each bring a valuable set of skills to the table.

Who/what inspires you? I am inspired by courage, resilience, intelligence, humor, vulnerability, and love. I am inspired daily by the way so many of my students show kindness and compassion for one another. I am also constantly inspired by the level of collaboration I am able to engage in at Walgrove. I love being part of a dynamic team of educators!

If you were not teaching, what would you be doing? If I were not teaching I would be writing poetry and practicing holistic approaches to healing through exercise, bodywork, and meditation.
